Making Soy Candles

making soy candlesWorking with wax and finding the perfect wick for making soy candles is extremely essential, as the wax and the wick serves as the main fuel of the candle to burn. There are countless of different varieties of wick and wax that are available in the market.

Each range has its own unique qualities. First, the type of wax that you are going to use has a bearing on the appearance of the candle. It is very vital to be aware of the melting point of the wax because you need to pour the wax at that time. The temperature at which the wax has started melting can be referred to as the melting point.

There are many waxes that are used for making candles and you may happen to know several common ones. Aside from making soy candles, the most common wax used to make a candle is paraffin wax. This is actually a byproduct of crude oil. Paraffin wax is accessible in various different grades. These grades are separated as per its different melting points. The lowest melting point can melt below one 130 degrees Fahrenheit. It is tough to make carved or molded candles from paraffin because it is too soft.

Another type of wax that is used in making soy candles is the soy wax; it becomes immensely popular these days because of its cheapness and known for its clean burning qualities. The melting point of soy wax is around 120 to 180 degrees Fahrenheit. Soy has natural oils that mix well with scented oils. While making candles, this wax does not shrink too much. Furthermore, you don’t need to do any tapping just to remove air bubbles.

For people who want to make candle with natural fragrance, beeswax is most preferred. Aside from making soy candles, beeswax candles are also popular especially to environmentalists. Although beeswax is quite expensive but it has many advantages that compensate the high cost. It burns gradually and does not release any smoke. It has a 150 degrees Fahrenheit melting point, this wax is best suited for creating candles which are not molded because it is quite sticky in nature.

Whether making soy candles or using any other raw material for the candle, you also need to find the perfect wick as there are wicks for votive candle, tea lights and various size containers. For this reason, you really need to find the right size of wick according to your candle. The bulk of the wick is not determined by the height of your candle but rather the principle should be that the wider the container, the thicker the wick should be. Once you purchase a wick, it should be marked with the recommended size of the container. If it’s not, compare the options that you can find.

When making soy candles, containers in excess of three point five inches should have the thickest wicks while containers with inches between two point five and three point five should have a medium-sized wick, and the jars with less than two inches need only the thinner wicks. Certainly, it doesn’t hurt to have thicker wicks in smaller jars, but they will burn off the wax quickly.

Finding the perfect wick and working with wax are not that easy to achieve. A couple of good choice and right evaluation is needed. It is a fun to make your own candle as it is very easy, affordable and entertaining.
